Tongues are weird. I feel like we can all just admit that to ourselves. But desire their weirdness, tongues should be clean. Or at least I want my tongue to be clean.

I use to scrape my tongue with the back of my toothbrush but oh girl, let me tell you. That is NOT good enough! Let’s get into this “new” (but secretly people have been doing it for thousands of years) trend of tongue scraping and why quite literally everyone need to do it.

Let’s be clear, you need to brush your teeth. This does not substitute for brushing your teeth. Okay now we can proceed.

What is it?

Tongue scraping is the process of using an object (tongue scraper) to remove excess particles, toxins, bacteria, + more. The gross white layer on your tongue in the morning is actually your body’s way of ridding itself of those things. However, we usually just drink water or coffee immediately and swallow that all back again. Yuck. So you need to properly remove it.

Benefits of Tongue Scraping

Improve your sense of taste by scraping off dead + excess taste buds as well as bring our tastes you may not have been able to distinguish before.*

Improve your breath smell. This is good enough reason to add this to your routine if you ask me. By ridding your tongue of the excess bacteria, you improve the smell of your breath.*

Oral health. Scraping your tongue can remove bacteria associated with causing cavities, plaque, and gum disease. No one has time for that.*

Boosts immune system + improved digestive health. Getting rid of the toxins on your tongue helps to promote saliva production which improves digestion. It also rids the body of toxins thereby strengthening your immune system and keeping you healthy and happy.**

Why won’t the back of your toothbrush cut it? It’s not designed to scrape your tongue fully the way metal tongue scrapers are intended. Also, it’s not anti-bacterial and all of that bacteria sits and continues to build up. Gross. So stop using your tooth brush and get you a scraper. You won’t regret it.

How to do it

Start at the back of your tongue and pull everything forward between 5-15 times. Go as far back as you can without making yourself sick. Rinse off the scraper after each scrape. Then clean off the tongue scraper with soap. Do this first thing in the morning before brushing your teeth or drinking anything.

Who's ready to start tongue scraping?! Once you start, you can’t go back.
