Should You Take A Probiotic? | Which One To Take
One of the main topics I talk about is gut health. Many people have heard of a probiotic but are still confused. Should you take one? Which one? What to look for? Do they work? Not to worry. Before diving into the specifics, let’s be clear. You SHOULD be taking a probiotic. No matter how great your diet is you want to take one… for life.
What is a probiotic?
“Probiotics are live microorganisms intended to provide health benefits when consumed, generally by improving or restoring the gut flora.” - wikipedia
They are the good bacteria in your gut. There’s always a mix of good and bad. We either want it balanced or more good than bad. Unfortunately due to stress, our diet, environment, and more we are usually really out of balance. That’s why taking one is so important so you can make sure you’re in proper balance.
Should you take one?
Do you exist? Yes? Okay then yes you should take one! Again, factors outside our control like air quality, toxins, sleep, other people causing us stress, and the lack of flora in the soil of our food makes it rather mandatory that as humans we take a probiotic.
What do they do?
First, they put good bacteria into your gut. Here’s why they’re important. Your gut is responsible for some pretty major systems in your body. Our gut houses 90% of our serotonin. Meaning it plays a huge role in anxiety, balancing your mood, depression, and your thoughts. It also contains 80% of your immune system. Get sick often or can’t seem to shake something once you’re sick? I bet you your gut is out of balance. It also plays a role in balancing your hormones, sleep, skin, and more! So taking a probiotic will help to improve all of these things. It really is life changing.
What to look for in a probiotic?
There are soooo many ones out there. What should you look for?
Time release- you want it to time release throughout your intestines to make sure it doesn’t just disperse at the top but gets throughout everything
Protected capsule- it’s important that it has some protective capsule or coating to make sure it doesn’t get eaten by your stomach acid and all goes to waste
5 billion+ bacteria- if you can aim for 10 that’s even better! Make sure you get one that has different strands of bacteria. It’s also okay to mix it up every couple of months to make sure your body is getting different kinds of bacteria.

How to take it?
I prefer to take mine without food in the morning so my gut can focus on fully digesting it rather than something else. Don’t forget to start taking it daily and pack it with you if you travel.
