How To Start Eating Plant Based

First things first, what the heck is a plant based diet. No, we hate the word diet. We shall call it a lifestyle. So what is a plant based lifestyle? Here at The Wellstyle Guide, we’re mostly vegan. Now that is a scary word for a lot of people, including us at the beginning. So we prefer the word plant based.

Plant based (adj.) (according to: The Wellstyle Guide): a way of eating that has the basis of plants including fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, and seeds. Daily meals consist of plants at the center.

Note, because you’re plant based it doesn’t mean you can’t eat meat, use dairy, or animal products. However, you won’t be finding that at The Wellstyle Guide as we are 100% plant based. But if you’re feeling frisky, toss some of your favorite non-plant based foods onto our recipes + ideas!

What does this mean for you? It means that one of the healthiest ways to eat is by having plants, or food from the earth, at the center and staple of your diet. It seems pretty easy, right? It actually really can be. So let’s talk about what this looks like for you in your everyday life and how you can start being more or even fully plant based.


1. Keep A Food Journal

Here’s why you should keep a food journal. 1. It allows you to track your current food and see how do you feel after your meals. From there, you can adjust your meals to foods that allows your body to thrive and not just survive. 2. It lets you track how much of your foods really is based in plants. Then you’re able to make slight adjustments to start incorporating more plants in (think a handful of spinach in your smoothie).

2. Experiment + Get Creative

Did you know that there are over 7,500 varieties of apples?! It would literally take you over 20 years to try all of the kinds of apples if you ate a new one everyday. This just goes to show that our choices are basically endless. All it takes is a little bit of creativity to have filling and delicious plant based foods (and we will never give you anything short of delicious)! For us, when we became plant based was when we actually fell in love with food. So play around! Try new fruits, veggies, combinations, and recipes to see what you love. Remember, there’s always another kind of apple to try.

3. Your New Bff: Pinterest

Experimenting can sound fun but where do you start? Oh, do we have the answer. PINTEREST! It literally becomes your best friend because recipes are incredibly abundant you’ll never feel like you’re lacking. Throw a “vegan”, “vegetarian”, or “plant based” after any recipe/food you want to make and you’re sure to have at least 20 amazing recipes come up. You can jump onto our Pinterest board for delicious plant based goodness. 

4. Start One Meal At A Time

Plant based: where you can have it your way but don’t get crazy! Listen, we are all about balance here. it’s about the journey not the destination and about small steps not huge gigantic leaps. Becoming plant based, even partly, is a process. Don’t try doing it all at once because you’ll get frustrated, discouraged, and not want to keep on going. Instead, start with one meal being fully plant based. Then add in a snack, then another meal, then your desserts, and keep going from there. Be patient with yourself and honor the journey instead of wishing away the mistakes because we always make them. So celebrate the small steps and we are celebrating right there with you! We didn’t become plant based over night and you won’t either. But you can do it.

 

Eating plant based is not only good for you but also the environment and the adorable animals. Like we said, it’s a journey but one we are on with you. We’re so proud of every big and small step you take towards a more wholesome, nourishing, and healthy lifestyle!
