How To Order Vegan At A Restaurant

If you are vegan or are thinking about testing out veganism, figuring out how to eat out can seem intimidating. I studied up on veganism for over a year before I made the jump because I wanted to ensure I was fully prepared. So that when I went to a restaurant, my insatiable need for delicious food was in fact met.

Here are the things you need to know to order successfully at a restaurant.

  • Don’t be around to ask the waiter/chef

I can’t tell you the amount of times I would have missed out on something better if it wasn’t for taking the scary step and actually asking the wait staff or even the chef what can be made vegan. Luckily, some things are labeled nowadays but much is not or there may be a separate menu. You don’t have to make a big deal about it. Just simply ask what vegan options they have.

  • Get creative

If you don’t know this already, veganism requires some creativity in all departments. This includes reading a menu. Don’t just look at the entrees or even the salads (how boring, am I right?!). Look at the full menu. See if you can get extra toppings on a salad, mix sides together, make a few swaps to an entree to make it vegan, or once again asking for special requests.

  • Call or look ahead of time

If you don’t look at a menu before you go out to eat, are you even vegan? But seriously, this is one of the best ways so you can know what you’re going to get, what they have, or if you’ll even be able to eat there.

  • Speak up

Finally, if you’re going out with friends, family, or even a date and you’ve looked ahead, you’ve called, and you can’t seem to find much besides some noodles with olive oil, don’t be afraid to speak up. You have two choices. 1. Eat before or after the restaurant which just sucks. or 2. Speak up to the person you’re going to eat out with and let them know you would be interested in a different restaurant that has more options. Unless it’s that person’s birthday or a really big occasion, if these people love and support you they should be happy, or at least not reluctant, to pick a place that supports your way of eating more.

Honestly, eating out as a vegan can be complicated and tricky. But it’s 100% worth it. Mostly, it just takes practice. The more you do it the easier it becomes and even like a game figuring out what you’ll eat.
